Obituary

Yoshiye Honda passed away on September 12, 2016 at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles. She was 91.

Born in Selma, California on December 29, 1924, Yoshiye was raised with siblings Haruo, Noboru, Matsuko, and Masaru Mike by Issei parents, Katsuo and Hana Yoshimoto from Hiroshima, Japan. She attended Kingsburg High School in California until her family was sent to Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona during WWII, along with other Japanese Americans. After the war, her family moved to Fowler, California. At age 24, she married Bob Masami Honda and began her life in Los Angeles.

Yoshiye was a loving and selfless wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She lived with gratitude and humility, and she loved and supported her family unconditionally. For many years and while raising her four children, she worked at the family businesses and supported her husband in all of his business endeavors in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.

Yoshiye, together with her husband, enjoyed golfing, which she continued into her seventies. She served as Fubokai president of Hollywood Gakuen, the Japanese language school her children attended. She was a long time, active member of Hollywood Buddhist Church and served as president in 1986. She was a member of the Karaoke Club at the Hollywood Japanese Cultural Institute, and an enthusiastic social dancer of Monday Night Dance Class during the 1990's. She loved to clean, draw, dance at Japanese Obon Festivals, and sing: jazz, American patriotic songs as well as Kayokyoku Japanese songs. She also enjoyed crocheting, watching Shirley Temple movies, and being with family.

Yoshiye enjoyed helping to raise her eight grandchildren. She often traveled to Japan to visit her grandchildren there as well as attend most of the basketball, baseball, and softball games and graduations of her grandchildren here in Los Angeles. She made memories travelling to many countries around the world and loved going to Las Vegas with family.

Yoshiye was predeceased by her husband, Bob M. Honda. She is survived by her brother, Mike Yoshimoto; children, Susan (Kenji) Oiwake, Victor (Billie Ann) Honda, Janet (Takeshi) Koyama of Japan, and Steven (Anne) Honda; grandchildren, Michelle, Christine, and Rachel Oiwake, Michael Honda, Masato and Stephanie Koyama of Japan, and Wesley and Claire Honda.
