Yoshiharu Morohashi was raised in post-war Japan when the old ways were fading away and being replaced by new influences.

At sixteen, he was apprenticed to learn carpentry. He learned his trade over twelve years from master carpenters who, in Yoshi's words, exemplified, "very good skill." Together they built over one hundred houses in the Tokyo and Yokohama areas, Kanagawa Prefecture.

After completing his training and earning his license, Yoshi had all the skills to design and build houses and supervise house construction through all phases, from the ground up. A similar skill set in the U.S. would be more like an architect/builder than a contractor.

Later, Yoshi traveled to New York to open a workshop and spent several years building Japanese style interiors, that combined traditional and modern features, and building custom designed furniture. Yoshi worked on a number of projects with Tod Williams and Associates, including the Eisenberg Residence, and as part of the project team earned the 1986 Distinguished Architecture Award for woodworking.

In California, Yoshi developed relationships with a number of clients, architects, and contractors and has done several projects for Chu + Gooding Architects in Los Angeles.

Yoshi was an incredibly caring and charismatic individual. He left a son, Max, and wife, Keiko, whom he took care of and loved deeply. His work touched many people and had a unique beauty — expressed through his vision and his hands. He will forever be loved and missed by his family and friends.

A Memorial service for the late Yoshiharu Morohashi will be held on Sunday, September 10, 3pm to 5pm at WUHO (Woodbury Hollywood) Gallery, 6518 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
