Born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, Wallace T. Sumimoto passed away on January 25, 2024 in Monterey Park, California. He was 90 years old. A private funeral service was held on Friday, March 8 at Fukui Mortuary "Chapel in the Garden" in Los Angeles.
Wally's formative years in Hilo were highlighted by his time at Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High School. He spent a lot of his time at Lincoln Park with friends from school and joined the "Lincoln Wreckers" athletic club.
He was drafted by the US Army and served for four years in South Korea as an aircraft parts supply clerk. Upon his discharge, he moved to Southern California to live with his brother Ken and sister in law Estelle while going to Cal State L.A. Estelle's younger sister Marion also moved to California to teach. Wally and Marion spent time together and eventually married in 1963. They went on to have three children.
Wally received a degree in Accounting and began working for the State of California, first as an auditor for the Collection Agency Licensing Bureau, then for the department of Savings and Loan where he worked for the next thirty years until the department was closed and operations were absorbed by the Department of Banking.
While his children were growing up, they participated in various sports and Wally became involved with CYC, eventually becoming a member of the Board of Directors. Once he retired, he started golfing with the Whittier Narrows Senior Golf Club and was involved in the planning of regular Hilo High School reunions in Las Vegas.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marion Sumimoto; children, Wendy (Dean) Thomas, and Delan (Leane) and Derek (Kathy) Sumimoto; grandchildren, Vance Thomas, and Jerran, Miles, Kenzie, Lauryn and Sophia Sumimoto; sister, Kazue Kaide of Hawaii; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
