Tomoaki (Tomo) Hayata passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026. He is survived by
his loving wife of 66 years, Dianne; his children, Kevin (Dr. Carole), Laurel (Jeff) Hirouji, and
Dr. Nancy; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Tomo was born in Sacramento in 1930, and lived in Los Angeles before being interned in
Tule Lake, California, with his family during World War II. His family returned to Boyle
Heights after the war, and Tomo would go on to graduate from Roosevelt High School, earn
his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UCLA, and serve in the US Army.
In 1960, Tomo would marry Dianne and start a family in the Crenshaw district of Los
Angeles. Tomo would go on to complete his master’s degree in mathematics and begin a
long and successful career as a software engineering expert at Hughes Aircraft
Company. In his free time, Tomo was a die-hard Dodger fan, an ambidextrous tennis player,
and an avid golfer.
Tomo leaves a legacy of family unity and of love of his fellow man.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 10:00 am at the Orange County
Buddhist Church, 909 S Dale Ave, Anaheim, CA.
