Obituary

Loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Tetsuo Ted Hasegawa passed away peacefully in Torrance, CA on Friday, May 9, 2008 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; children, Peggy Hasegawa, Kerrie (Mike) Najjarian, Aprile (Patrick) Haynes, Steve Hasegawa, Carol (Ralph) Ternes, Dee (Bob) Moore; and six grandchildren, Missak & Hovsep Najjarian, Bryan & David Haynes, and Trevor and Amy Ternes. Nieces and Nephews, Janice (Wesley) Mukoyama of Santa Clara, CA, Jerry (Janet) Matsumoto of Sunnyvale, CA, Calvin (Karen) Matsumoto of San Jose, CA, Susan (George) Ogawa of Cupertino, CA. Dad was born in Sacramento CA on January 16, 1921, one of two children, big brother to Chizu (Matsumoto). He spent his early years in Wakayama Ken, Japan, returning to Torrance in 1932 and graduating from Redondo High in 1940. During WWII, he was interned at Rohwer, AR where he met Mom. At the end of the war, he moved to Chicago and worked at Ruby Chevrolet. Mom moved to Ann Arbor Michigan to teach, but as love has it, Mom moved to Chicago where she married Dad on September 21, 1945. In 1948 they moved to Torrance where, he built their home, continued to build a family and a thriving automotive repair business on Hawthorne Boulevard; a dusty two lane road. In 1963, Dad went to work for the City of Torrance as a mechanic, becoming supervisor at the city garage, and moved the family to a new home. Dad retired in 1983 and with Mom and his sister, Chizu, spent a lot of time in Las Vegas and visited Japan several times. For over 50 years Dad was an active member and past president of the Harbor Koyasan Buddhist Church and Torrance Civitan Club. He volunteered unselfishly for the Torrance chapter of JACL and enjoyed his 55-year membership in the Harbor Sportsman Club. He was known for his kindness and generosity to the community, neighbors, family, and anyone in need. He will always be remembered for his quick smile, endurance, impartiality, and humbleness. We will all miss him dearly, but he has joined his younger sister, Chizu Frances Matusmoto who preceded him in death in October of 2007 . The family requests no flowers please.
