Obituary

Sumiko "Sumi" Okura, a 92-year-old, California-born Nisei, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2015 in Placentia, CA.

Sumi was born in Armona, CA and grew up in the central valley of California with her parents Goichi and Yasu, sister Grace and brother Mori. During WWII, the family was relocated to Poston AZ.

Along with her husband, Motoi, Sumi was co-owner and operator of Covina Farms Market for many years. She was also a proud and devoted member of the Republican Party and really admired Ronald Reagan. Sumi was also a longtime member of the Orange County Buddhist Church and she was thrilled that all three of her children were married there.

After 32 years of marriage, her beloved husband, Motoi Ray Okura, passed away in 1977. Sumi is survived by her children, Gregg Norio (Iris) Okura, Sharon Hideko (Alvin) Matsuura, and Russell Motoi Okura; grandchild, Sherisse Sumie Okura. She is also survived by her sister, Grace Yamada, and sister-in-law Ruth Okura, Frances Okura and Shizue Nakayama as well as many nieces and nephews.

Although quiet by nature, Sumi was always very independent, a forward thinker, a smart investor, a devoted wife and above all a thoughtful, generous, considerate and loving mother who will be greatly missed.

Family services were held privately at the Orange County Buddhist Church. In lieu of flowers or koden, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in the name of Sumiko Okura.
