Obituary

MORIZUMI Phd., Dr. S. James (Age 82) San Francisco, CA born, passed away on July 28, 2006, beloved husband of Tamie Morizumi; father of Michael (Reiko) of Japan; brother of Chizuko (Kenneth) Osaki of San Francisco; stepfather of Jo Ann (Ben) Yoneyama of Japan, Glenn (Sharlene) Miyagishima, Alan Miyagishima, Pauline (Joe) Kikuchi; uncle of Steven Osaki, and David Osaki and Christine Osaki both of San Francisco; and also, he is survived by many other relatives here and in Japan. Dr. Morizumi had over 30 years of technical and management experiences in the aerospace industry. His most recent experience as a full time employee had been six years with Hughes Aircraft Company in the fields of electric-optics, infrared technology, radar tracking and detection, nuclear survivability, EMI/EMC, satellite communication, airborne radar surveillance (SDI), EW, and other system analyses. He also spent six months in Tokyo to form a joint venture company (Japan Communication Satellite Co.) with two other Japanese companies (1985 to 1986). Prior to joining Hughes, he was the director of the guidance and control and space application division of HR-TEXTRON in Irvine, CA for the 1981 to 1982 period. His responsibilities were to develop new businesses in the high technology areas of G&C, Infrared, Remote sensing, Thermal control and Nuclear survivability. His activities involved marketing, recruiting and proposal writing. He made numerous technical presentations to the military and aerospace customers. Between 1960 and 1981, he was employed by TRW (previously, Space Technology Laboratory, Inc.). He was involved in many different activities during the 21 years with TRW because of his technical versatility. Some of his major activities included aerodynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, remote sensing, nuclear survivability and mathematical modeling of engineering problems. He worked on many projects involving Minuteman, Atlas, Titan, Saturn, Able, Apollo, OGO, TDRSS, HEAO and Space Shuttle to mention a few. His outstanding achievements during this period include the successful modeling of rocket exhaust plume heating, the effective approach to steering the vehicle which is simultaneously pitched and yawed to avoid flying over the heavily populated areas and the development of a wide band absorption model which simulates the non-grey gaseous radiation. Between 1955 and 1960, he worked for Douglas Aircraft Co. in the development of the first commercial jet aircraft, DC-8 and the Nike-series ground to air missiles as the senior aerodynamicist in Santa Monica. Dr. Morizumi had presented and/or published over 50 technical papers at various international symposiums and journals. He was a member of AIAA, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Pi Mu Epsilon, and listed in the International Who's Who of Intellectual and the Who's Who of American Men & Women of Sciences. Funeral service will be held on Thu. Aug. 10, 7:30 p.m. at Gardena Buddhist Church, 1517 W. 166th St., Gardena, CA.
