RUBY KWONG LEE
Ruby was the 94 yrs old, widow of Mark Yen Lee, cherished mother of Dr. Meriel Wu (Woody), Dr. Diana Lee (Dr. Jack Seto), Dr. Arlene Lee (Wilson Wong), and Dr. Vernon Lee (Ryoko Uratani), grandmother of Melissa, Lyndi, Michelle, Tyler, Zachary, Jennifer, Sophia, and Elaina, and great grandmother of Samuel and Matthew.
Ruby's paternal grandfather had come over during the Gold Rush, returning to China to be with his wife and family. She was born in Sacramento to King-Lam Kwong and Quan Ming Lee, the 4th child of seven children. Her early education was both in California and Canton, where she was recognized as a talented calligrapher. She went on to college at UC Berkeley, with graduate work in organic chemistry, then, became the first "female" chemist in labs at Sheldon and Rexall. As their family of four children grew, she earned her teaching credential at USC, and became a math educator with LAUSD at Berendo JHS, until her retirement 26 years later. She loved family interactions, growing orchids, creating flower bouquets and corsages, traveling, cooking, counseling and helping others. The Memorial Service will be at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Dr., Los Angeles at The Old North Church on Friday, May 15th at noon. Lunch reception will follow in Monterey Park.
