Riyoko Chikami passed away on September 24, 2016 at the age of 102. She was born January 20, 1914, to Eijiro and Chiju Kinoshita in Los Angeles, California. Her parents and older sister, Hatsumo, were born in Kumamoto, Japan. Riyo's father died of influenza during the outbreak of 1918. She was 4 years old. In 1939, she married Jack Yoshio Chikami and joined his family. Jack's mother and father, Hatsu and Yoshitaro Chikami and Jack's siblings, Toshi, Susumu, Shigeru, Minoru, Tsudeko (Sue), May, and Sueyoshi (Joe). Riyo and Jack had 5 children, Tayeko, (passed at 2 1/2 months), Janet Maloney (Mike), Ray Chikami (Vicki), Barbara Souto (Mark), and Karen Furuta (Sam). Jack passed in 1999 at the age of 89, one month short of their 60th wedding anniversary. Riyoko is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, Harry Yoshimura, niece, Yoe Okumura, and many other nieces and nephews.
