Obituary

KUSHIDA , Raymond O. (84) Resident of La Canada Flintridge passed away on Monday, March 17 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Arlene Kushida , his two sons Grant and Jared, their wives Lisa and Laura, and two grandchildren Kendall Sayuri and Max Ryu.

Ray earned his BS from Columbia University, and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware. Ray was an accomplished and widely respected chemical engineer who worked long tenures at JPL and Boeing Satellite Division. He designed and problem solved propulsion systems for satellites for over four decades until he retired four years ago. He was a passionate and adventurous world traveler, who along with Arlene, recently went to places such as Russia, China, Japan, Cambodia, Argentina, Antarctica, Belize, and all throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Ray loved rooting on his local sports teams, especially UCLA football, for which he owned season tickets for over twenty years. Additionally, Ray held season tickets to the LA Philharmonic, LA Opera and Dance. His many hobbies included reading, cooking, camping, walking, playing bridge, and star/planet gazing. Ray will forever be remembered as a brilliant scientist, a devoted husband, and a caring and patient father and grandfather.

Private memorial services were held Sunday, March 23.  Donations were made to the Planetary Society in Pasadena and the Japanese Cultural Institute of Gardena.
