Perry Yoshiro Miyake, Venice, CA-born and raised Nisei resident of Mar Vista, CA died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wed, Jan. 28, 2015 at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, at age 90.
The eleventh of Tanzo and Masa Miyake's 13 children, varsity baseball starter and member of Venice High School's "Evacuated in April" Nisei class of Spring 1942, enforced WWII resident of Santa Anita Race Track, Rohwer, Arkansas and Mount Clemens, Michigan, U.S. Army veteran of post-war Korea, longtime resident of Venice and Mar Vita, gardener and rebuilder of the Japanese American community of Venice, CA, as coach and former president of Venue Youth Council, U.S. postal carrier at Fox Hills Mall and Culver City, Perry was a dedicated Christian who tried to live out his faith, an enthusiastic golfer, and member and usher at Gardena Valley Baptist Church.
Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Aiko Alice (nee Suzuki), sons Perry Jr. (Jan) and Rev. Ron (Carol) and their adoring granddaughters Natalie and Katie, sisters Shiz Okura and Yuri Amamoto, and many many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Perry was especially grateful to his late brother-in-law David Ikkanda, his oldest sister Tomo's husband, who helped the family relocate back to L.A. after the war, opening their home to brothers returning to the U.S. after service and their mother for many years.
In March 1983, Perry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and on Oct. 16, 1983, Perry and Alice were baptized, along with Alice's oldest sister Kazie Yanagihara; and on April 5, 1987, their 35th wedding anniversary, through Pastor Ron Matsuda, they rededicated their marriage at GVBC, where Alice and Kazie's father, Leo Kamezo Suzuki, was a founding member.
Through the years, Perry was able to celebrate his mother Masa's 100th and his oldest brother Ocean's 101st birthdays, to fellowship with the Prime Timers, facilitate Shig's Bible class, and participate with the Golf Fellowship and the retiree golf group on Thursdays at Los Amigos golf course.
He was also to see his son Perry Jr's play at East West Players, publications of his novel '21st Century Manzanar' and pictorial history 'Venice Japanese Community Center and the 100+ Year History of the Japanese American Community of Venice, California', and Perry Jr. and Jan's baptism at Venice-Santa Monica Free Methodist Church.
He also celebrated his son Ron and his family's return from Japan after 10 years as Christian missionaries in Yokohama, Japan, his granddaughters Natalie's graduation from UC San Diego and Katie's from Azusa Pacific University, and Ron's ordination as Reverend at Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley, where he currently serves as Associate Pastor.
And until the end, he really enjoyed playing golf with his beloved wife Alice, a cancer survivor, every Tuesday at Penmar Golf Course, in Venice, adjacent to the land where, a hundred years ago, his family farm once sat, where he and all his brothers and sisters were born.
Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Gardena Valley Baptist Church, 1630 W. 158th St., Gardena, CA, Pastors Steve Langley and Ron Miyake officiating. Casual attire requested. No flowers please.
Burial services will be held privately at a later date at Green Hills Mortuary, Palos Verdes.
