Obituary

Miyoko Hongo was born on May 4, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. She was the first child born to Ginjiro and Suzu Yokota. She had 3 other sisters born after her, Chiyoko, Yoshiko and Michiko.

They grew up in Boyle Heights, where her father was in the produce business and her mother was a housewife. Miyoko attended First Street Elementary School, Hollenbeck Junior High, and Roosevelt High school. In 1942 the war broke out and her whole family was sent to Poston, Arizona. After her first year, she was able to leave Poston and go inland to work. She went to stay with her newly married cousin and his wife in Denver, Colorado. She also stayed at the YWCA and worked in several jobs as a bookkeeper, childcare worker and other part time jobs. After the war ended, she met her family back in Loa Angeles, where they had neighbors taking care of their house.  Miyoko attended and completed a business course at Woodbury College. She worked in several jobs while socializing with many friends and going to Nishi Hongwanji Church. She met her husbandIsao Isao Eas Hongo there. They were married in 1948 at Higashi Honganji Buddhist Church.  They lived in several apartments near her parents' home until they had their first child Ronnie on September 22, 1949, then they purchased their first home directly across the street from parents in Boyle Heights. They had two other boys, Russell born on October 3, 1953 and Raymond on September 12, 1954. Eas worked in the produce business with his brother-in-law given to them by Ginjiro Yokota their father-in-law. Miyoko stayed home as a housewife, raised her boys and volunteering at their schools. When her boys were older, she learned to drive, she decided to work part-time for interests. She worked at Robinson's department store in downtown L.A. as a clerk and then secretary. In the 1970's they moved to Montebello, Miyoko changed jobs and became a secretary at Security National Bank.

In 1979, Eas became ill. He retired early and discovered he had a rare form of cancer. After going to many hospitals for possible cures but he passed away in 1980. Miyoko continued to work at Security Bank that turned into Bank of America. Her boys remained with her until they began their careers.  She worked until she retired in 1987. She lived with her older son Ronnie in their Montebello home. She enjoyed her retirement traveling sometimes, gambling, walking with friends daily going out to breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. She volunteered at Higashi Church and at Japanese American Museum. She also crafted quelled and sewed. At Higashi, she sang in the choir for many years. In 2007, her son Russell passed away from cancer. In 2014, she fell and fractured her hip. She recuperated in the Hensel Hollenbeck Nursing Home till she healed and moved back to her home in Montebello. She fell at home several other times and returned for more rehabilitation at Hollenbeck, and became unable to do a lot independently. Her doctor suggested that she go back and remain there for better daily care. She remained there being visited by her sons daily until the Covid Pandemic. For almost a year no one was allowed to visit her, watch saddened everyone communication with the nursing home reported that she continued to be heathy and do well. Finally in the first week of March, her sons were able to visit with her through a glass door. They were able to visit twice she was very happy and looked very healthy. However 5 days after the second visit she had a stroke. She was not able to see her boys and sister until she passed away on March 18, 2021.
