Obituary

Misayo Shiba passed peacefully with family by her side December 27, 2023, after a large stroke.  She passed away comfortably and with dignity.

She was the youngest born to Matsujiro and Ishi Sakurada in Terminal Island, San Pedro, CA April 2, 1924. She was predeceased by her parents and husband Joseph Minoru Shiba, February 26 1968 (age 46), sisters Fuku Sato, Chiyoko (Ken) Sakurada and adopted brother Kisajiro(Fujiko) Sakurada. She leaves behind her two daughters Sharon Shiba and Christine (Mark) Uyehara, and grand-daughter Maille Emiko Uyehara.

The family moved to Japan when she was two, and educated there in Miho, Shimizu-shi, Shizuoka-ken. She returned to the U.S. in 1947 aboard the naval ship, USS General MC Meigs being the first 82 back to the U.S. who were stranded after the war. They landed in San Francisco then went to live and work with her Auntie Miki in Scottsbluff, Nebraska for 9 months and then resettled in L.A.

Misayo married Joseph Minoru Shiba in January 1952. They resided in Westlake then purchased a home in Lincoln Heights, just 10 minutes from Little Tokyo in 1954.

When Joseph passed away in 1968, she courageously led the household. As a seamstress, she worked her way up from piecework to high end evening wear, working with the top tier in fashion until she was 71 years old.

Many hobbies kept her busy: knitting crocheting, quilt making, watching Dodgers games, growing vegetables and flowers. She kept her mind busy with Sudoku, crossword puzzles, math problems she did in her head, reading the Rafu Shimpo, volunteering at Keiro and the Miho and Shizuoka Kenjinkai. She was the best cook, creating the tastiest dishes, wrote in a daily journal, and always kept a calendar nearby. She was smart, brave, had common sense, centered, sweet, mentoring, good natured, talented, unselfish, and always kept a positive attitude.

She was a wonderful Obachan to Maille. Many of her qualities have rubbed off on Maille. Showing her how to live life with happiness, to be independent, be adaptable, and to maintain a level mind without anger. She was so proud of Maille's accomplishments and artistic ability. Maille is her legacy.

She had been living with Chris and Mark, and was self-sufficient with a great appetite, and good memory until her last day. She had good friends only to outlive most of them. She was the last original home owner on her street. She lived a good life. We were fortunate to share her long life. We miss her so much. We will also try to live our lives to the best in honor of her.
