Masao Takahashi, WWII 100th/442nd veteran, passed away peacefully at home on July 25. Mas was born in Modesto on August 9, 1924. He was preceded in death by his brothers Hideo "Pete" and Yoshio "Weesh" Takahashi, and sisters Miyo Takeshita and Toshi Nakahira.
As a longtime volunteer and charter member of the Go For Broke National Education Center, Mas was dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and Military Intelligence Service. In the past two years, his efforts included speaking at Southern California area high schools, inspiring students with candid stories about Manzanar and the war.
Mas is survived by his loving wife Elma; children, Larry Scott (Susan Markee), Donna (Dwayne McMullen), Gail (Christian Schmitz), and Teresa (Eric Eaton) Takahashi; grandchildren, Mina and Michael Takahashi; and many relatives and friends. He had a wonderful smile and sense of humor, and his caring spirit will always be with us.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Go For Broke National Education Center (
