Obituary

Linda, or Gwat Lien, was born in Indonesia on October 26, 1930.

She grew up in Bandung where all her family also lived after the war started a few years later. In

retrospect, she believed it was God's providence that spared her whole family from the horrors

of war. She was quite the tomboy and followed her brothers on their many adventures, but also

tagged along with her mother on many family visits. She recalled many stories from those

encounters. Her memory was remarkable whenever she vividly recounted those stories.

After she moved to Jakarta to pursue higher education in home economics, she met the man of

her dreams. She married in 1955 and was blessed with a son the following year and a daughter

three years later. She settled down to be a homemaker and a mother. There were many trips

abroad as she visited her far-flung family. And she acquired the same skill as her mother did

before her: making friends! Her Christmas cards list was incredibly long.

After her husband passed away, she began to spend more and more time in Los Angeles, and in 1992 decided to emigrate to the USA. It was like a new chapter in her life. She immersed herself in the activities of the Indonesian church GKI Lake Avenue by joining the choir, Bible study and home fellowship group. She made many new friends and discovered many of her late husband's relatives lived in nearby Orange County. She picked up gardening and memorized the names of many plants to exercise her brain. In the cooler time she settled indoors to enjoy her K-dramas. She felt very much at home in her new adopted country.

After 15 years, the long commute to Monrovia nudged her to find a new home church at

Brentwood Presbyterian Church. As her travels abroad slowed, she continued to enjoy

occasional luncheons and local outings with the Young At Hearts. She treasured the times when

family members visited her. Even during the pandemic lockdown, she was content to follow

zoom activities and simply watch the world from the back seat of the car on regular weekend

drives.

Since she enjoyed a blessedly healthy life, her sudden and unexpected passing was shocking.

She always prayed that she would be spared a lingering and debilitating illness in her final days.

God is merciful. Linda fell at home and was called away 2 days later on October 2, 2021 at St

John's hospital in Santa Monica. She was 90 years old, and left behind many loving family

members and friends.

She will be remembered for her love to her family, cherished as a mother and sister, and most

importantly for her love of God. She will remain in our hearts for her gentle spirit, gracious heart

and wonderful smile.
