Obituary

Our beloved mother, June Fumiko Iba, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2022, in Laguna Hills, California, at the age of 91.  She was born in Salinas, California, the seventh of eight children, to Kiyoka and Sumiye Kato, and raised in nearby Gonzales where her family farmed.  In 1942, mom and her family were relocated to the Japanese internment camp in Poston, Arizona.  After the war, her family moved to Long Beach, where mom graduated from Long Beach Poly High School.  She met Shozo Iba, M.D. while working at a hospital, and they married in 1954.  They settled in Downey, where dad established his radiology practice, and raised their five children.

Mom was active in her children's activities, serving as a girl scout troop leader and PTA president and hosting events at our home.  She was a kind, gracious, loving, and generous woman who was devoted to her children and was a second mother to all of her children's friends.  After mom and dad divorced, mom went back to CSULB to obtain her bachelor's degree in Business Administration.  Mom was an avid reader and bridge player and played as often as possible in Downey and in Mission Viejo where she moved in 2010.  She travelled to many parts of the world, but her favorite times were get-togethers with her family, including a Kato family reunion to celebrate her 90th birthday last year.

Mom was preceded in death by her youngest daughter Elaine (Randy Messenger), and is survived by her children Nadine (Jaime Nahman), Diane Ohnemus (Steve Barker), Lynn (Derek Johnson), Wayne (Patty), her 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 28, at 11 a.m., at Fukui Mortuary, 707 E. Temple St., Los Angeles.  Mom will be laid to rest with Elaine at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach.  In lieu of flowers or koden, please consider a donation to Alzheimer's OC or GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer.
