Obituary

Jean Y. Miyamoto, 90, passed away peacefully in January. She was a long-time resident of Monterey Park.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Sam Miyamoto in 2017.  She is survived by her loving children Dr. Sharon (Steven) Miyamoto-Oda, Julie (Denny-deceased) Sunabe, Dr. Steven (Angela) Miyamoto; grandchildren Rachel Oda and Elizabeth and William Miyamoto; brother Ken (June) Kageyama; sister Lois (Toshio-deceased) Yamaji and many other relatives.

Jean was born in Los Angeles and her family was incarcerated in the internment camps during WWII. She then grew up in Burbank and Los Angeles and attended UCLA. She enjoyed a long career in education, and she was a well-loved and highly regarded teacher at LA High and
Garfield High School.  She taught Japanese, typing, business and shorthand.

After retiring, her interest was giving back to the community along with her husband. She was the manager for the Little Tokyo Nutrition Center (Koreisha Chusoku Kai), a nutritional and social
service center for Seniors, as well as their Meals on Wheels program through which her husband delivered meals Monday through Friday to the elderly and homebound.

In recent years, she lived at Nikkei Senior Gardens and enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships made there. She appreciated the staff and wonderful care that she received. She also lived with family part-time and relished spending time with them.

A private celebration of life was held on Sunday, January 21 with her immediate family.  Reverend Mark Nakagawa officiating.

In lieu of flowers or koden, if you would like to make a gift, donations can be made to Nikkei Senior Gardens - 9221 Arleta Avenue, Arleta, CA 91331, 501(c)(3), with Jean's name in the memo. The donations will help purchase a memorial bench in remembrance of her and will be located near the gardens that she enjoyed so much.
