A private funeral service for H. Toru Mukai was held at Fukui Mortuary on March 30, 2012. Burial followed at Westminster Memorial Park. Toru passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 18, 2012 at the age of 88.
Born in Venice,CA, in 1923, his family moved to Huntington Beach in 1926 and was one of the original farming families in Orange County. Toru graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1942. Prior to his high school graduation he, along with all Japanese Americans on the West Coast, was interned. Toru and his family were sent to the internment camp in Poston, AZ. After the war, Toru and his family returned to Huntington Beach and resumed operating the Mukai Nursery. For most of his adult life, Toru owned and operated Mukai Nursery.
Toru will be deeply missed by his wife of 56 years, Sadako, their daughters Gail, Laurie (Mark Yamada) and Ellen(Jeffry) Yonemura, granddaughter Katie Mukai and grandsons Michael, Mitchell and Matthew Yonemura. Also survived by daughter Wendy (John) Petrouski,granddaughters Shannon and Melissa, and great-grandson Liam Ferguson.
