Obituary

Hideo Joe Kawano, an 89-year-old Yamaguchi-Ken, Japan-born Issei long-time resident of Boyle Heights and former internee of Poston Relocation Camp during WWII who enlisted and served his country honorably in the United States Army, passed away on August 11, 2016.

Hideo was gifted musically since he was a child. At Poston Relocation Camp Hideo was the leader of the band when he was only 16-years-old. During and following the war years, Hideo lived in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York where he listened and learned the craft of jazz from such notable musicians as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Johnny Otis, to name a few.

Hideo is survived by his brothers Yosh and Nobuo Kawano, and his nephew Frank Kawano and his nieces Hana R. Brown and Ellen Biasin.

Hideo will be laid to rest privately at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
