Henry Masatoshi Kanegae went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, November 16, 2005 after a lengthy illness.
Henry Masatoshi Kanegae was born on April 29, 1917 in Talbert, California to Asajiro and Asano (Sato) Kanegae.
The family lived in Talbert and Santa Ana, where Henry attended local schools in Huntington Beach and Garden Grove. He graduated from Garden Grove High School in three years then attended U.C. Davis where he began a two year course in poultry husbandry; truck crops and animal husbandry. When his brother Roy became gravely ill and then passed away, he returned to the farm to help his father.
After Pearl Harbor, he was evacuated to the relocation center at Poston, Arizona with his family. He set up the Employment Office for all of Poston and managed the sugar beet contracts. After nine months in camp, Henry and his family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to farm. At the conclusion of the War, he returned to Santa Ana, California where he started the Bolsa Packing Company, a produce growing, packing and shipping company. Later, he organized Calberi, a cooperative farmers group in Orange County.
Henry was very active in the Japanese American Citizen's League, serving both locally and nationally. He served as National First Vice President from August 1968 to July 18, 1970. A devout Christian, he served faithfully as an Elder for the Wintersburg Presbyterian Church, and was an active Church member until he took ill. He served as a volunteer for the Bowers Museum of Santa Ana, was a member of the Japanese American National Museum, and remained a strong Republican.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren, flying his own aircraft, fishing, music and traveling.
Henry is survived by his loving wife, Akino: his children: Ellen (George) Agcaoili, Marilyn (Ron) Izumita, and Marjory (Ron) Nakamura and Dr. Thomas Kanegae: Grandchildren: Suzanne Agcaoili; Alison and Kristina Izumita; Tia (Kent) Mark; Tod Kanegae; Courtney (Matt) Duke; Laurie (Ted) Hirano; David (Rose) Nakamura; and Molly Serizawa Kanegae: Great Grandchildren: Christopher and Lauren Hirano; and Kelsey, Kyle, and Olivia Nakamura.
Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 22, from 6:00 – 8:30pm, at Fukui Mortuary "Chapel in the Garden", 707 East Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23, at 10:00am
at Wintersburg Presbyterian Church, 2000 North Fairview Avenue, Santa Ana, CA
