Obituary

Reverend Helen Alexandra "Alix" Evans passed away October 12, 2008 at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Alix was still waging a fearless and determined battle with breast cancer when she succumbed.

Born November 28, 1959 in Charleston, West Virginia, Alix was raised in St. Albans where she had deep roots and maintained a lifelong connection to the area. She is survived by her father, James Ray Evans and her stepmother Jackie, who remain in West Virginia, and her sister Ame Evans and stepsister Kim Smith Dieckhorner.

Alix received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 1981 and both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University in 1987. She was admitted to the bar in California and established a decade-long legal career while also a devoted church and choir member, pro bono volunteer, and social activist involved with social justice, prisoners' rights, anti-death penalty, and animal issues.

After losing her mother, Anne Hutchison Evans also of St. Albans to cancer, Alix changed career paths, completing her seminary studies at the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas in 1998. She returned to Los Angeles, was ordained at St. James Episcopal Church in Los Angeles and served the rest of her life at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, first as assistant and, from 2002, as rector.

In her tenure at St. Mary's, she presided over the church's Centennial, was active in the Nikkei Interfaith Fellowship Group, and was devoted to community outreach, helping create the Yamazaki Memorial Community Garden.

Funeral services for Alix will be at St. Mary's, 961 S. Mariposa Avenue, Los Angeles on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be directed to the St. Mary's General Fund at that address, the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037, or the Mount Calvary Retreat House, P.O Box 1296, Santa Barbara, California.
