Harry Timoteo Dalton (y Valadez) took his last breath on this planet at 8 am on Friday, August 9, 2013. He was with his beloved mother, Desideria and older sister Dawn. Harry died in his favorite city, the city of Angels, Los Angeles. In addition to his mother and sister, he left behind on Turtle Island, his son Timoteo "Teo", nephew Rigoberto "Rigo", his cat MOST, and numerous family members and friends.
Harry was born in LA on October 2, 1970 to Desideria Valadez and David Dalton. A child of Mexican and Irish heritage Harry was always interested in culture and identity. A student of Los Feliz Elementary, King Jr High, and John Marshall High School, Harry made a name for himself for being a friend to many and performing in every musical, drama, or cabaret he could get into. Highlights include "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" (Linus), "Midsummer's Night's Dream," and "Fesitval".
During his junior year of high school Harry lived in Heppenheim, Germany where he became fluent in German. He was fluent in Spanish and knew simple phases from over 25 languages. He was curious about language and culture and made an effort to find out about the diversity of people in California and beyond. In the summer of 1985 he traveled to England to study world history and met with his sister for a two-month journey with backpacks and a Eurail pass through Europe.
In 1988 Harry enrolled in World College West on a scholarship. He majored in world cultures, economic development, and art. He traveled to Michoacán, México where he lived for 6 months in an indigenous community learning how to make ceramics and understanding their business model as well as their culture, earning a Bachelors of Arts degree.
Moving to San Francisco after graduating, Harry lived a bohemian life writing, painting, and enjoying life with his girlfriend Vanessa Flynn and roommates Brian Decker, Damon Edwards, and Tammy.
Dalton was the front-man, lead vocalist, primary lyricist and harmonica player of the L.A. rock band, Irrelevant Rituals, which emerged in the Hollywood/Los Feliz/Silver Lake area circa 1987. With a line-up that would come to include guitar, bass guitar, drums, key-board/synthesizer, trumpet, saxophone, and back-up singers I.R. embraced several popular music genres and unabashedly weaved them into their repertoire to the delight of fans and dumbfounded club owners whose dance floors abruptly filled up as the band took the stage. Dalton's lyrics ingeniously danced among the prosaic, vulgar, surreal, mythic and narrative. Blues, punk, funk, ska, heavy metal, hip-hop, circus music, T.V. themes and broadway-style show music all found their way into songs and sets crafted for each occasion. Dalton would typically appear dressed in many layers of clothing that he would somehow shed, layer-by-layer, during the course of the performance until left only in shorts by the crescendo end. I.R. Shows were sometimes created to fit a story format. Their public debut, "Twink-ee Creme The Musical", presented at the now-defunct Olio in Silver Lake featured a video story intercut with songs performed live. Later, "Gore Park" was performed with a set of songs written as a complete narrative at the Roxy in Hollywood.
Dalton also brought his performing talents of writing, vocals and harmonica to the L.A. band, "Johnny Made Me Do It" (J.M.M.D.I.), the line-up of which included rhythm and lead guitars, bass guitar and drums . J.M.M.D.I. made it's first public debut circa 1999, it's repertoire borne from influences of blues, punk and funk music styles. Dalton's last known recorded vocal performances were made in Los Angeles with "Johnny Made Me Do It" in the summer of 2013 for a album set for release in late-2013 or 2014.
After a few encounters with the legal system Harry decided to become a lawyer and enrolled in law school at the prestigious Southwestern Law School. He graduated in 2 years and passed the Bar Exam the first time. He was the recipient of the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund scholarship and won awards for his performance in Moot Court. Upon graduating he worked for a few law firms and won a numerous cases involving copyright law for technological inventions and creative control of tech ideas.
Harry spent the last few years of his life caring for his elderly parents, helping his mother mend from major back surgery, teaching his son and nephew how to play D&D and various RPGs and MMPGs, and writing his epic novel, yet to be published.
