Harold Hideto Urashima, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on September 29th 2024, surrounded by family, following a holy anointment at home, a testament to the love that surrounded him throughout his life.

Born on January 2, 1929, in Aiea, Oahu, Hawaii, Harold was the fifth child of Shigekichi and Kou Urashima, growing up alongside his two sisters and two brothers.

Harold's journey began at Maryknoll Catholic School in Honolulu and culminated with his graduation from McKinley High School in 1946. He witnessed the historic events of Pearl Harbor from his family's home in Aiea Heights, a moment that would shape his early life. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in Japan and achieved the rank of Technician 5th grade before receiving an honorable discharge in 1948.

Upon returning to Hawaii, Harold ventured to Chicago, Illinois, where he worked diligently to earn a B.S. in Mathematics from DePaul University. During this time, he married Mary Sugiyama and welcomed a daughter, Colette. Harold continued his education with post-baccalaureate work at the Illinois Institute of Technology, studying IBM computer courses.

With encouragement from a professor, Harold relocated to California, where he spent six years in the defense industry. His early work involved validating Air Force ballistic missile guidance equations on an IBM computer. He later pursued systems analysis courses at UCLA and enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Computer Systems Analyst at Northrop Corporation until his retirement in 1994.

Harold cherished his time in California, where he made Palos Verdes his home before moving to Laguna Woods in 2013 to be closer to his daughter and granddaughter. He loved returning to Hawaii for visits, exploring international destinations with Mary, and enjoying trips to Las Vegas.

Known for his soft-spoken nature and gentle kindness, Harold had a warm smile that brightened the lives of those around him. He maintained lifelong friendships from his childhood, high school, and professional life, and he was deeply grateful for the love of family and friends.

Harold was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years and his siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Colette Urashima (Glen) Nagami; granddaughter, Cherise Nagami (Eric) Yoshinari; great-grandson, Drew Yoshinari; and great-granddaughter, Kaila Yoshinari. His quiet strength and love will continue to inspire his family.

Harold will be interred with military honors at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu, returning to his roots in Hawaii.

He will be profoundly missed but will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
