IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Florence Sachiko
Kurihara
June 29, 1935 – June 1, 2021
Florence Sachiko Kurihara was born on June 29, 1935 in Seattle, Washington to parents
Tsunesin Kaname and Suimatsu Masaoka Kaname who were immigrants from Japan. Sachi
came from a family of 10 siblings, 7 sisters and 3 brothers.
As with nearly 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, in 1942 Sachi's family had to leave the
West Coast and live out the war years at Tule Lake a concentration camp located in northern
California just south of Klamath Falls, Oregon.
On September 6, 1969, Sachi married Edward Kurihara at the First Congregational
Church in Los Angeles. Edward and Sachi set up residence in Monterey Park and lived there for
46 years. They adopted Kenny's French poodle offspring and named him "chippie" .
They named the dog "chippie" because of the he loved chomping on potato chips. Chippie
accompanied Sachi to the supermarket, bank, and visits to her nearby siblings. Both Ed
and Sachi enjoyed listening to music. Sachi's favorite music groups includes The Four
Tops, Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross. Sachi enjoyed playing tennis, bowling and playing gin
gummy. One of her favorite pastime was playing the "one‐armed bandits" in downtown Las
Vegas at the Golden Nugget, California Hotel and Fremont. Just about every time she went to
Vegas, she would hit a jackpot and would generously share her winnings with her siblings. For
the most of her adult life she kept active and was conscientious about healthy eating majority
of the time. Every once in awhile without Sachi's knowledge, she would quietly grab a burger
at a local eatery. Although Ed and Sachi did not have children, Sachi served as the funloving
"cool" to many nieces and nephews and their extended families.
She lived a rich and full like with friends and family. The many people whose lives she touched
will miss her hearty zest for living and smiles of love.
Private family services were held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, with Bishop Noriaki Ito of Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple.
