MRS. EMI SHIMOYAMA HINO
Emi Shimoyama Hino, 85yo, of Northridge, California, passed away on February 12, 2026, following a battle with cancer.
Emi was born on December 31st, 1940, in Fallon, Nevada to Densaku and Chiyoko Sano. She was the third of six children, and in 1947, the family moved to San Mateo, California. Emi was a star pupil in grade school, earning the prestigious Turnbull award. She attended UC Berkeley where she studied psychology and English. She then embarked on a career in education, working for decades as an elementary school teacher. She married Minoru Shimoyama and raised two children in Northridge. Following her retirement from teaching, Emi was busier than ever. She began dancing, joining an Odori group and teaching line dance to seniors at the San Fernando Japanese American Community Center. She married her second husband, Frank Hino, and took up his hobby of growing orchids. Emi enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and beloved granddaughter, Kiyomi. Emi was an active member of the Chatsworth United Methodist Church (formerly West Valley UMC) and treasured her community.
Emi is remembered as a loving and patient mother and grandmother, brilliant with an enduring thirst for knowledge, and always wearing a smile. Emi lived her life with joy and gratitude. She is survived by her two children, Suzi Shimoyama (Tadashi Moody) and Todd Shimoyama (Rosemary Gutierrez-Shimoyama) and one granddaughter, Kiyomi Moody, as well as her siblings, Fujiko Yamasaki and Hiroshi Sano, and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 28th at 11am at the San Fernando Japanese American Community Center. Please RSVP at Emicelebration@gmail.com.
