Asako was born in Carson, CA to Matsu and Hisakishi Nakanishi on August 6, 1925. She remembers tagging-along with her father, who picked-up fish on Terminal Island to sell in his fishmonger truck.
After the 8th grade, her family went back to Japan to take care of Asako's grandfather. When the war broke out, Asako was away at middle school. She remembers her classes building airplane parts instead of holding academic classes. And hiding out in an empty rice field watching a solo B29 drop incendiary bombs on her cousin's town, setting the whole town on fire.
After the war ended, she and her friend Beverly Ito (both from the US), were about 20 years old and convinced a family friend from their Katada hometown who lived in Tokyo to host them. So, they reinstated their US citizenship and found a job working for the US military (army) across from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, working as "proofreaders". This was a fun and enjoyable time for both of them.
After a few years, Asako moved to the US to join her sister in Denver, CO where she met Yutaka Otsubo. They married and moved to Los Angeles, where Yutaka worked as a gardener. Asako babysat for another family as she raised their 2 daughters, Peggy and Shirley.
Yutaka retired at age 62 and took up tennis at the local courts. At around 75, Yutaka developed senility and health issues and they moved to Torrance to be closer to their daughters. After Yutaka died in 2000, Asako rekindled her friendship with Beverly. They became very close friends and would sometimes spend hours in the car chatting about "olden times" and were traveling buddies.
Dorothy moved to Brookdale Southbay in 2022. She enjoyed her new friends and going on scenic drives. And she was blessed with wonderful caregivers. She celebrated her 100th birthday in August with almost 40 friends and caregivers at Brookdale!
