Doreen Fumiye Iwata, 90, passed away on October 12, 2006 at the Mission Care Rehabilitation Center in Rosemead. She was born to Mr. & Mrs. Kenji Hasegawa in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 25, 1916. The family moved to Southern California in 1924.
The attack on Pearl Harbor and the outbreak of World War II resulted in the family being sent to the Granada-Amache Relocation Center in Colorado. After returning to California in 1945, Doreen embarked on a career as an executive secretary for the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.
On July 5, 1952 in Los Angeles, she married Masakazu Iwata, a professor of history at Biola University in La Mirada, who preceded her in death in 1988. They were married for 46 years.
Doreen was affiliated with the Los Angeles/Mission Valley Free Methodist Church in Los Angeles/San Gabriel for over 70 years. An accomplished musician, she served as the church organist for over 40 years.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 28, at 11:00 A.M. at the Mission Valley Free Methodist Church, 1201 So. San Gabriel Blvd., (one mile north of the I-10 freeway), San Gabriel, California. Arrangements are under the direction of Fukui Mortuary in Los Angeles. A private ash interment service will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California.
