Los Angeles – Captain Chia-Chiao Liang, 88, passed away Wednesday May 18, 2016
in his Pasadena home. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Yen-Chin; three
children, Bruce, Jake and Stephanie; and eight grandchildren, Samantha, Brannen,
Sydney, Caitlin, Kelsey, Spencer, Karina, and Kayley.
Chia-Chiao was born in the Chao Yang District of China to father Jie-Fu and mother
Qing-Lan Ye on July 26, 1927. He left home at the young tender age of 17 to find
work as a marine merchant, and sailed the world as a respected captain for 30 years,
all in an effort to provide for his immediate and extended families.
On May 22, 1955, Chia-Chiao married his beloved Yen-Chin, and settled in Taipei,
Taiwan to raise their three children. He would go on to travel all over the world as a
sea captain and live in the Bronx, NY; Flushing, NY; Freehold, NJ; and eventually,
Pasadena, CA.
A devout Buddhist and deep thinker, his hobbies included Chinese calligraphy,
reading ancient literary and historical novels, and watching martial arts films and
period pieces. Known lovingly as Gong Gong or Ye Ye to his grandchildren, he spent
his final years conscientiously tending to his vegetable garden, compiling booklets of
his favorite Chinese proverbs, and studying the Buddhist sutra. He loved sharing
meals with his children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
Service to be held Friday June 3, 2016 at 10:00am at Zenshuji Temple in honor of
Chia-Chiao's incredible life.
