Obituary

Barbara Sumiye Nishimoto
June 12, 1943 – January 24, 2022

Barbara Sumiye Nishimoto was born in Poston, Arizona to Frank Toshizumi and Mildred Haruko Yanai. The youngest of three children, Barbara grew up in LA with her brother Clyde and sister Ruby. She attended Virgil Junior High followed by Belmont High, where she made first chair violin in the school orchestra.

As a mother, her family lived in Hacienda Heights and would eventually settle in Fair Oaks, California. Her husband was a pharmacist, and they together ran the family pharmacy businesses in Whittier and then Sacramento. She grew to love the changing of the seasons near the American River and its pace of life. She enjoyed traveling, and loved spending time with friends and family, especially over good food and conversation. She had a little sweet tooth but was dedicated to her walks with friend Carol Bower and 10,000+ daily step count. She played a good game of blackjack or video poker, and loved watching UCLA football and basketball. Her favorite song was "Dynamite" by BTS.

She cared profoundly for her three children, each in her own unique way. Courageous far beyond her stature, she beat breast cancer and a fractured hip later in life. She always faced life's challenges head on. We are very proud of her and the life she lived as a dear mother and friend, and we will miss her deeply.

Barbara is survived by her sister Ruby Ruri Komae and children Aileen Miyoko Takahashi (husband Bill Spenler), Geoffrey Masato Nishimoto (wife Yukiko Kojima), and grandson Wave Kentaro Nishimoto (The apple of her eye). Her son Curtis Toshio Takahashi passed away in 2020 and is survived by his wife Kelly Takahashi. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and brother Clyde.
