Obituary

Arthur Takayoshi Osako, M.D., 77, of San Juan Capistrano and formerly of Honolulu, HI, passed away on July 31, 2011 in Mission Viejo, CA. He was a retired pediatric hematologist-oncologist with Central Medical Clinic in Honolulu.

He was born on October 6, 1933 in Paauhau, HI to Yoshikazu and Mitsue (Yamato) Osako. In the summer of 1937, his family moved to the island of Lanai where he spent most of his childhood. He graduated from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu in 1951, and went on to receive degrees from Kenyon College in Ohio and the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York. In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Itazuke Air Force Base in Fukuoka, Japan. While in Fukuoka, he was introduced to Michiko Morihisa and they were married on November 1, 1962. Following his military service, he completed training in pediatric hematology and oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle and returned to Honolulu to join Central Medical Clinic. He was a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, and attended at Queen's Hospital, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital, and later Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. He retired in 1996 after 30 years in practice and moved to San Juan Capistrano the following year. He kept busy in retirement by gardening, painting, cooking, reading novels, playing bridge, learning Spanish, taking ballroom dancing lessons, traveling the world, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Charlotte Griffiths. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Michiko; daughter Lynn (Levin) Matsukawa of Honolulu; sons Philip (Sherrie) of Laguna Niguel and Tilden (Lisa) of Tustin; sister Margaret Platt of Temecula; brother Warren (Susan) of Lanai City, HI; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Orange County Buddhist Church with Reverend Marvin Harada presiding. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI.
