Obituary

A memorial gathering for the late Mr. Akito Maehara, an 82 year-old, Portland, Oregon-born Nisei resident of Monterey Park who passed away on August 17 was held at Fukui Mortuary "Chapel in the Garden" on August 27.

Mr. Akito Maehara, known to his loved ones as "Aki" enjoyed a life built on integrity, family, honor and passion.

During the course of Aki's lifetime, there were peaks and valleys but most importantly there were amazing memories. His life spanned such monumental events as the Great Depression, WWII where he proudly served his country, the first moon landing of Apollo 11 for which his industry played an integral role. Perhaps no world event can compare to his personal triumphs that spanned his marriage to Jean Yae Maehara, including the birth of their three sons - Chris, Gary and Eric - and several subsequent grandchildren.

As with most Nisei, Aki lived a humble and modest life, while always remembering to enjoy the fruits of his labor every now and then. He loved to travel and experienced many different places and cultures. Aki was also an avid tennis player who continued to hit the courts even during the final months of his life.

Aki's legacy will undoubtedly live on in his children, grandchildren and all the lives he has touched.

The Maehara family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to all who came to celebrate their father's life.
