In Loving Memory of Akio Horii
Akio, the son of Nobukichi and Ikuko Horii, was born on November 07, 1931 in Venice, California. On November 13, 2014, at the age of 83, he passed away peacefully with his family at his side in his home in Culver City.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran assigned to the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War and was discharged honorably as a Senior Airman in 1956.
A wise and generous man, he worked hard at the nursery to provide for his family and to leave a legacy for future generations. He enjoyed all things golf, his friends and adored his grandchildren and most of all his wife of sixty-one years, Mary.
Akio is preceded in death by his older sister, Kimiko Tachibana. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Horii; younger sister, Mary (Fred) Ushijima; daughter Catherine (Alan) Sugai; son, Chris (Kari) Horii; grandchildren, Amanda Riley and Christopher Horii; many nieces, nephews and other relatives here and in Japan. He will be forever loved and missed.
A private funeral service was held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, officiated by Reverend Iwohara.
All koden will be donated to the non-profit organization, K9s for Warriors, in memory of Akio Horii.
