Michael "Mike" K. Coil, 58, of Monrovia, CA, passed away April 8, 2017. Mike loved his family and meeting new people. Always a joy to talk with, he never missed an opportunity to start a conversation.
Mike was raised in Lansing, IL, and graduated from TF South High School in 1977. He moved to Los Angeles County, CA, in 1979, and attended Pasadena City College where he studied to be an electrician. Mike was employed by the City of Pasadena Public Works Department for 37 years. At the time of death, he was a Street Light & Signal Repairer in the Street Maintenance and Integrated Waste Management Division, and was an active member of Local 18 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Mike and his family were members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Monrovia, where he volunteered his time and talents to help coordinate many of the church's annual events, including the May Festival, Monte Carlo Night and Ash Wednesday services. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1242.
Mike loved sports and participated in local soccer leagues as a player and coach. He coached his daughter for 10 years, and continued coaching even after she moved on to play in the adult league with him. Most recently, he played in the Region 2 AYSO adult league and coached the Region 2 AYSO girls Radioactive team, and this year, guided the girls team to GU14 Area 1C Area League Play-Through and All-Star Team champions.
Mike was preceded in death by his father Walter K. Coil Jr. He is survived by his wife Kazumi Coil, née Okonogi; son, Michael Coil; daughter, Crystal Coil; mother Maryann Hill, née Fredianelli and stepfather, Robert Hill; brother, Brian (Nicole) Coil; sisters, Sue (Rick) Peterson and Wendy Rolston; nieces, a nephew and many cousins.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 19, and a funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m. Both will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 740 S. Shamrock Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016. Messages of condolence may be shared at www.fukuimortuary.com/home/obits.
As Mike believed in helping people and protecting wildlife and the environment, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity, National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) or the Sierra Club.
